Amaechi Leaks Nigeria’s Internal Security Secret To Foreigners

Reports obtained by Post-Nigeria on Friday, May 6, revealed that the former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has breach security by divulging “classified information” to foreigners, an offence which is punishable by law.

Amaechi, in a statement signed by his media office on Wednesday, May 5, admitted that he did so in the best interest of the country.

“How could Amaechi disclose state information to foreigners when the authenticity of such information has not been proven?

“Do foreigners have more interest in the development of Nigeria than Nigerians themselves? Why should a sympathizer weep louder than the bereaved? In any case, this is another diversionary tactic.

“Amaechi should explain to Nigerians why there is insecurity in our land. These are the things that matter more to our people,” a security expert reacted.

The minister had given a graphic description of his involvement in the “leaked” secret letter written by former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and now Emir of Kano, Sanusi Muhammad II, to former President, Goodluck Jonathan, on the non-remittance of $49.8 billion from oil sale to the federation account.

Earlier, Sanusi had in an interview with  Forbes Africa TV titled, “My Worst Day” with Peace Hyde, disclosed that Amaechi was responsible for leaking to Obasanjo a letter he (Sanusi) wrote to Jonathan on the “missing” $49.8 billion oil revenues.

Putting the allegation in perspective, Amaechi said through his media office:

“A concerned and patriotic Nigerian who felt sufficiently troubled with what was happening then, gave a copy of the Sanusi letter to Amaechi, in Amaechi’s capacity as the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF). Like Amaechi, we should appreciate that concerned Nigerian’s patriotism.

‘’When Amaechi got the letter, he spoke with Sanusi who was still the CBN governor to confirm the authenticity of the letter…’’

“Around that period, a government delegation from the offices of the Secretaries of State and Defense at United States of America, visited Amaechi in Port Harcourt to discuss the issue of oil theft in Nigeria.

“… In the presence of journalists covering the visit, Amaechi brought out the Sanusi letter to the visiting American delegation to buttress the point that Nigeria was losing far more money to non-remittance of proceeds from oil sale into the federation account, which everyone seemed to concur, was in itself, another form and another dimension to the issue of oil theft.

Condemning the act, a security source stated that Amaechi’s decision to make public a classified letter to foreigners was an act of tantamount to internal security breach.

The source said: “Amaechi leaked the nation’s internal secret to foreigners in the quest to settle scores with the past president and can never be in the interest of the nation. Did he make any attempt to discuss that with the president before inviting foreigners? I weep for Nigeria”.

However, justifying Amaechi’s decision, his media office said: “To suggest, infer or even extrapolate that Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi surreptitiously, clandestinely or underhandedly ‘leaked’ the CBN governor’s (Sanusi’s) letter is indeed most unfair, disrespectful and uncharitable to his person.
