Striker Mario Mandzukic has agreed to join Spanish champions Atletico Madrid from Bayern Munich, according to the German club’s sporting director Matthias Sammer.

The Croatia international, 28, was contracted with the club until 2016.

But Sammer confirmed the deal when introducing Bayern’s new striker Robert Lewandowski.

“Nothing is signed yet. But I think each other’s word can be relied upon,” he said.

Mandzukic scored 33 goals in 54 Bundesliga games for Bayern since joining them from Wolfsburg in 2012.

Mandzukic was Croatia’s player of the year in 2012 and 2013

He played for Croatia at this summer’s World Cup, scoring twice in their 4-0 Group A defeat of Cameroon, but was unable to help them progress beyond the group stage.

Atletico Madrid, beaten Champions League finalists last season, needed a new striker after Diego Costa completed a £32m switch to Chelsea.

Lewandowski, who would have competed with Mandzukic for a starting place at Bayern, has joined the Bundesliga champions from Borussia Dortmund, having signed a five-year contract in January.

“I knew it was time to make the next step,” said Poland international Lewandowski, who scored 74 goals in 131 league games for Dortmund.

“I know that every new player needs time but I hope the transition won’t take long for me and that I’ll be able to give my best from the first game.”
