Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River state surprised workers by announcing the payment of salaries for May on the first day of the month.

The Nation reports that the workers, who gathered at the U.J. Esuene Stadium for the May Day celebration, began to receive salary payment alert from their various banks.

Happy and excited workers shouted “alert, alert” and praised the governor for such a pleasant surprise.

Before now, the state government had paid salaries between the 13th and 20th day of each month.

Ayade who was named the “Best Labour Friendly Governor in Nigeria” said that his administration had a duty to give workers a sense of dignity.

“We must create opportunities for labour to feel a sense of dignity. If you are truly a Christian, you must know that as you care for your kids, you must care for labour,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Adams Oshiomhole, the governor of Edo state, has increased minimum wage for workers in the state from N18,000 to N25,000.

Addressing a rally organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to mark Workers Day’ anniversary, the governor promised prompt payment of salary arrears of staff of local government councils in the state.

He revealed that plans have been concluded to pay staff of Egor local government council who are presently been owned 13 months salaries within the next two weeks.‎
