SSANU demanded that the termination letters given to its members must be withdrawn before the strike will be called-off.

Leadership reports that the indications emerged after the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, in his bid to end the strike, held a closed door meeting with the leadership of SSANU at a hotel in Abuja, on Sunday, January 3.

A source privy to the meeting, said the minister showed readiness to make sure the strike was halted, but SSANU had demanded that the termination letters given to its members must be withdrawn before the strike will be called-off.

The minister in his response, promised to meet with relevant stakeholders involved in taking decisions on the matter, including the Budget Office and the National Universities Commission (NUC) before he can give any answer.

Recall that SSANU commenced strike since December 24, 2015 alleging that about 2,000 universities staff school workers were affected by a circular from the government to vice chancellors of universities to delete the names of the workers from the government pay roll.

SSANU insisted that the union had in 2009 entered into agreement with the Federal Government on the subject matter, noting that the removal of the workers names is contrary to the agreement.

There was an uproar when the decision of the federal government to fire 2, 000 university workers across the country was made public. The workers were alleged to be sacked by January, 2016.

In a related development, Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state has appointed Professor Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun as the Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU).
