Ford China To Recall 220,000 Distributed SUVs

The Kuga SUV is one of Ford’s best sellers in China.

SHANGHAI— Ford Motor Co. is recalling about 220,000 Kuga sport-utility vehicles in China, citing the risk of fuel leakage, the U.S. car maker said Friday.

The cars were built by Changan Ford Automobile, Ford’s car-making joint venture in China, between July 2012 and November 2014, Ford said on its website.

When the Kuga runs on severely bumpy roads, the friction between the car’s fuel tubes and its hand brake cables could lead the tubes to wear, Ford said. In the worst case, the wearing could lead to fuel leaks that pose safety hazards.

Ford said it and its Chinese partner Chongqing Changan Automobile Co. will replace the wearing fuel tubes or install a protecting jacket to cover them. The services will be free, it added.

The Kuga is one of Ford’s best-selling models in China. In the first nine months of this year, Changan Ford sold 96,667 Kugas in the country, accounting for 16% of the joint venture’s sales volume
