Minister Sets Up C’ttee On Abuja Airport Repairs

Following Federal Government’s provision of about N1 billion to urgently rehabilitate the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport runway in Abuja, the Minister of State, Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, has set up a committee to oversee the work.

This is as the government designated Kaduna airport as alternative to Abuja for flights diversion, while rehabilitation was in progress.

A source in the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, said the runway had been in bad state due to overutilization and, therefore, needed repairs.

The source said the committee was expected to schedule the maintenance and also decide whether the runway would be closed daily or for some hours of the day so that work could start on the facility.

He added that the work was already advertised and that Gilmore, Julius Berger and PW had submitted bids for the project.

Government is making urgent effort to start the rehabilitation of Abuja airport runway and has provided funds for the work, which could start anytime from now.‘’

”The Minister of State, Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, had set up a committee about six weeks ago to oversee the rehabilitation, determine the dates and decide whether the airport would be closed for the period of restoration or choose to close it, for example, from 1:00 am to 6:00 am every day so that the airport could be operated during part of the day,” the source said

.

According to the source, the minister is expected to discuss the issue with the National Security Adviser, NSA, to agree on the date rehabilitation works would start on the runway.

Acting General Manager, Corporate Affairs, FAAN, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, who confirmed the rehabilitation plan, said all efforts were being made to ensure the runway was restored to international standards.
