Nigeria Loses Out of CHAN 2016 After 1 – 0 Loss To Guinea

Nigeria’s Super Eagles has been ruled out of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2016 in Rwanda after a slim 1-0 defeat to Guinea in their final group game.

The match ended coach Sunday Oliseh’s dream of guiding Nigeria to her maiden win at the championships.

Guinea, needing an outright victory to stand any chance of further progress to the knockout stages, started the brighter of the two sides and got their deserved reward for positive play on the stroke of half time with a goal that was a masterclass of simplicity.

Neat one-two passing between Alseny Camara and Moussa Diawara down the right ripped the Nigerian defense apart, before Ibrahima Sankhon tapped into a gaping goal.

Desperate to get a foothold in proceedings, Nigeria head coach Oliseh brought on tournament leading scorer Chisom Chikatara at the restart to partner the ineffectual Tunde Adeniji in attack.

And after huffing and puffing, substitute Bature Yaro’s free kick on 78 minutes was the first real chance the Eagles managed in a second half as the Syli stars sat comfortably on their lead.

Guinea could have doubled their advantage in the 81st minute when Sankhon’s fierce free kick bore on target but was expertly dealt with by Ikechukwu Ezenwa in goal for the Eagles.

Substitute Bright Onyedikachi’s thunderous volley was cleared off the line in the 86th minute before Osas Okoro fired a long range effort just wide as Nigeria tried in vain to salvage their tournament.

Elsewhere, the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia walloped Les Mena of Niger 5-0 to top the group on goals difference, with Guinea qualifying in second.
