Osun Shuts Glo Office Over N532m Tax

The Osun State Internal Revenue Service has sealed off the office of Globacom Nigeria Limited in Osogbo, the state capital, over the company’s refusal to pay taxes amounting to N532m to the state government.

The Chairman of the OSIRS, Mr. Dayo Oyebanji, said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Monday.

Oyebanji said the agency took the action to ensure that the company remitted all the outstanding taxes due to the state.

According to him, the sealing of the Globacom office was done after the agency had secured a warrant of distress from the Osun State High Court.

Oyebanji stated that the company would not be reopened until it had paid the outstanding taxes to the state.

He explained that the OSRIS had been discussing with the company on the issue for the past two years but the telecommunication giant had refused to discharge its duty to the state.

Oyebanji added that the state’s house of assembly had summoned officials of the company and they promised to remit the taxes within two weeks but they failed to fulfil the promise.

He said,

“Before this time, the state government had been lenient with the Globacom because of the importance of their business to both the people and the government.

“We engaged them in a series of meetings with the assistance of the House Committee on Communication but we have yet to get reasonable response from the company.

“It is only the Globacom Limited that we are sealing because others, especially those invited by the assembly, have responded to our calls. It is only the Globacom that has not shown up. They have been giving one excuse or the other.”

He appealed to individuals and corporate organisations in the state to cooperate with the state government by paying their taxes and other levies promptly.
