President Buhari To Meet Obama Over Economy And Security

President, Muhammadu Buhari will on Tuesday in New York, meet with president Barack Obama on the sidelines of the US leader’s final appearance at the Assembly session.

The 71st UN-General session is expected to open on Monday.

This will be Buhari’s second appearance since he came to power on May 29, 2015.

The summit, which is the first of its kind organised by the General Assembly at the Heads of State and Government level, is expected to come up with a blueprint for a better international response to enhance protection of migrants and refugees.

However, the meeting as confirmed by the White House is not on the itinerary of the Nigeria leader released on Friday. Obama would also discuss with Buhari on the continued US support for security and economic changes in Nigeria, as well as government efforts to counter the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

The Nigeria and US have a pending agreement over the sale of US military equipment to fight insurgency in Nigeria.

The special adviser on media to President Buhari, Femi Adesina in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja said Buhari would deliver Nigeria’s statement at the opening of the General Debate of the Assembly on “The Sustainable Development Goals: A Universal Push to Transforming Our World.”

Adesina said the president would also attend a high-level summit to be hosted by the UN on “Large movements of Refugees and Migrants.”

“The summit, which is the first of its kind organised by the General Assembly at the Heads of State and Government level, is expected to come up with a blueprint for a better international response to enhance protection of migrants and refugees.’’

he said.

He added that Buhari would deliver a keynote address on “Taking Climate Action toward Sustainable Development in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin.”

He revealed that while in New York for the annual gatherings of world leaders,the president would also attend series of meetings that are very significant and of interest to Nigeria.
