Real Madrid Face Likely Expulsion From Copa del Rey

Real Madrid stand to be kicked out of the Copa del Rey because Denis Cheryshev, who scored against Cadiz on Wednesday night, was ineligible to play because of suspension.

Manuel Vizcaino, president of the Andalusian side, confirmed his club would officially complain about the incident, which if precedent from earlier this season is followed, would see the Spanish giants eliminated.

Osasuna were removed from the cup competition in September after fielding suspended player Unai Garcia.

Cheryshev picked up three bookings for Villarreal in last season’s competition, which earned him a one-match ban carrying over to this year.

But Rafa Benitez picked him to start in the round of 32 first leg against Cadiz and he opened the scoring after just three minutes as Madrid won 3-1 away from home.

However, during the first-half of the game, news broke that Cheryshev was supposed to be suspended and the player was taken off after just 40 seconds of the second period had elapsed.

Cadiz have until 2pm on Thursday to register their complaint with Spain’s football authorities and Vizcaino said they would, as it was in the team’s best interests.

‘The situation requires a quick resolution. In a board meeting, Cadiz have decided to report the improper line up of Real Madrid. On top of everything, for respect for football,’ he said.

‘It is done with pain in the heart because Real Madrid is a club that is our friend. The decision is firm and has been taken unanimously. We will call the people from Real Madrid tomorrow. It will be the competition judge who decides.;

Other reports said Borja Mayoral, named on the bench, was also supposed to be suspended after having been sent off in the final of the Copa del Rey Juvenil youth tournament, though he did not enter the field.
