Wayne Rooney Scores Beckham-esque Halfway Line Goal in Manchester United’s match against West Ham(Watch Video)

West Ham 0-2 Manchester United, Premier League – 22 March, 2014

Although not his “favourite” goal and simply a “nice” goal, Wayne Rooney may have scored the goal of the Premier League season with this stunning half-volley that was nearly from halfway line mark of the field in Manchester United‘s 2-0 win over West Ham at Upton Park yesterday.

From just inside the halfway line after seven minutes at Upton Park, Rooney sensationally half-volleyed the ball over goalkeeperAdrian, who was caught off his goal line – with David Beckham watching from the stands.

Rooney outmuscled Hammers James Tomkins on the halfway line, allowing the ball bounce in front of him before executing the perfect lob from nearly 50 yards into the back of the net.

Hammers Spanish goalkeeper Adrian, who had strayed off his line, scrambled back in vain as the ball bounced into an empty net.

Rooney’s goal was reminiscent to one of David Beckham’s most memorable Manchester United goals – the  audacious lob over Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil Sullivan from the halfway line on the first day of the 1996-97 season, when United went on to win the league.

After scoring the spectacular long range goal on Saturday, Wayne Rooney‘s humble response was “I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite.

“It’s just instinct,” Rooney said. “It’s one of those I’ve tried many times and thankfully today it’s gone in.”

David Beckham, who is in attendance at Upton Park, was seen applauding Rooney’s goal.

Wayne Rooney recreated David Beckham’s stunning halfway line goal in front of the man himself to give Manchester United the lead against West Ham.

But when asked if his goal was better than Beckham’s, Rooney jokingly said: “Of course.”
